Key dates for the upcoming general election

With a general election to be held on Thursday 4 July, South Cambridgeshire District Council is reminding residents of key dates ahead of polling day.

For residents aged 18 and over, those on the electoral role in South Cambridgeshire will be able to record one vote for their preferred candidate.

Voters should be aware of the following deadlines ahead of polling day:

• Tuesday 18 June: This is the deadline to register to vote - by 11:59pm on the day. If you are not already registered, you can register to vote.

• Wednesday 19 June: If you wish to apply for postal vote, you must do so by 5pm on this day.

• Wednesday 26 June: The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is 5pm on this day. This is if you are unable to attend the polling station, you can apply for someone to vote on your behalf.

• Wednesday 26 June: The deadline to apply for free voter ID is 5pm on this day.

The Council would also like to remind residents that you must now bring photo ID to vote at polling stations. There are several different types of identification that are accepted. You can find out more or apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate.

Liz Watts, Chief Executive and Elections Returning Officer at South Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “The upcoming general election will affect all residents in the South Cambs area. Every vote counts, so make sure you are ready to take part on polling day. Do make a note of these key dates and act now so you can cast your vote come Thursday 4 July.

Don’t forget you need photo ID to vote and that only specific forms of ID are accepted.  These can be found here. If you don’t have voter ID we can help – but make sure you apply in time.”

Due to parliamentary constituencies changing for this general election, the District Council is now responsible for the new constituency of St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire, as well as the South Cambridgeshire constituency. For some people, the constituency they are in may have changed from the last general election. To check which constituency you are in, you can put in your postcode on the Parliament website.
